You and Me and the Goddamn City

I am smoke
You are stone
I recall your heart beating
your skin warm

The element brownstone
The screaming crosswalk
The racing blood on
The gathering sidewalk

It's you and me
And the goddamn city

I'm floating numb
Above the cubicles
Heads sucked into
Document crucibles

lunch crowds turn
Around the warning signs
of shallow clicking sounds
in tumbling café lines

It's you and me
And the goddamn city

You were dressed well
The last time we met
Talked of melting into
Some digital jet set

Shame on me, I was too busy
Staring at the wall,
As conversation blurred
Into a free fall

I'm emptying
This head of memories,
From bridges' swoon
To streetcar reveries

The highrises
Where we made our name
Burned to the ground
In some future's name

You are smoke
I am the room
And all of our friends
Are leaving too soon

The small apartment
That became our bane
The day we tossed our vows
And went batshit insane

It's you and me
And the goddamn city
